Is a letter of Complaint a formal letter?

YES. A letter of complaint is a formal letter leading us to the question: What is a formal letter?

A formal letter refers to a letter written in a professional and ceremonious language adhering to specific guidelines and formats. Formal letters are written for official purposes. It can be used when addressing professional contacts like writing to the HR department, the Principal of a school, dignitaries, colleagues, seniors,  or authorities.

Bear in mind that there are certain norms you need to follow when writing a formal letter. A formal letter begins with the sender's address located at the top right-hand corner of the page followed by the date to which the letter is written. Endeavour to separate your date from the sender's address.

After the date is the receiver's address written in the left-hand corner of the page. The next thing is the subject which is written at the centre of the page. The subject tells us the purpose of your letter. Be concise and straightforward. The subject is followed by the salutation.

The body is what comes next after the greetings. In the body, you give details of everything. For instance, in the case of a police complaint about theft or any sort of threat, you need to write without leaving out any details.

Close the letter by using a complimentary closing either "Yours faithfully or Yours sincerely". We use the latter when the addresser knows the name of the addressee. The next is the signature of the sender which is directly below the complimentary closing.

To the Commissioner of Police,

A letter of Complaint about Theft

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complain about the theft that happened yesterday around 6:00 PM on my way home to Ommisport, Bepanda. I boarded a motorcycle at Rond point (Location) heading to Bepanda but the motorbike rider fled with my bag (Brown) at Feurouge (Location/spot where the theft occurred).

There were 3 people on the bike (I, another passenger and the bike rider). To sit comfortably, the bike rider opted to carry my bag in front. When we got to Feurouge his bike suddenly stopped working amid traffic. As reasonable as it may sound, the bike rider asked me and the other passenger to step aside for him to resolve whatsoever caused the malfunction of the bike. Immediately we stepped down, he kicked off in the blink of an eye.

The contents of the bag are:

An arch colour Dell Laptop with its charger, 2 android phones (Mark: Infinix Hot 10 Play and Itel S12), An relax modem, National Identification Card, Ordinary and Advanced level certificate, Birth certificate, and Attestation of completion of studies. Sir, I wish to request that you open an investigation into this matter. Contact me through XXXXXXXXX for further clarification.

     Yours faithfully,

      Signature.
